Scaffolding For Writers

“How we spend our days is how we spend our lives… A schedule defends from chaos and whim. It is a net for catching days. It is a scaffolding on which a worker can stand and labor with both hands at sections of time. “

—Annie Dillard, The Writing Life

Dead People’s Wedding

The griesly bride.
The wind pipe thin groom.
The hollow cheeked
maids of honor.
The cavernous church
echoing the rattling
exchange of rings.
A knot of crows
hoorahing in
the wicker brain trees.

Then the slow
ride north after a
windy kiss to rest
in the loam for
another lesser eternity.
Pairs of eyes
follow the procession
like hungry magpies.

Master and Submissive

“One cannot be too scrupulous, too sincere, too submissive before natureā€¦ But one ought to be more or less master of one’s model.”

–Cezanne
