Noon in the City

A construction site in overalls,
the men swinging a steel beam anchored in the sky.
When the fountain in the park below sighs
the skeleton building inhales.

The men wear badges on their hard hats
telling others the decibel level of their desires.
Shadows are scattered around
sipping at the day like migrating birds.

An autistic boy is playing in the fountain.
His shrieks help move the shadows into position
so the rest of us can see them.
