West Berlin 1976

A man holds out his shoes
for a stranger to be buried in.

Clattering candles, aching walls,
the Reichstag building eats butterflies.

Chairs in rows waiting for democracy to come back.
Remember the Nazis were democratically elected!

A soup bowl with broth and a floating dough ball:
people have killed for less.

Male prostitutes in leather pants making sure
the walls of the train station by the zoo don’t fall down.

Another entire city waits
under the streets breathing through straws.

Honeyed tea in porcelain cups.
Brown coal ovens like glass blue soldiers.

Leaving means the same as staying.
