Seeing Heaven

I have seen heaven.
I know what you are thinking–
what rubbish. I can’t explain it myself.

What is surprising is that I’ve been there before.
Old friends. Everyone knew me. Happy to see me.
We were young again. There is music.
They have fixed the place up.
There are no mirrors.

Now I know that heaven starts here by entering
into the deepest and most soulful
and joyous parts of human activity.

Later, it is like walking into a different room.
It is in the deepest sense like going home.
Maybe not to your family,
but to the people who loved you
before you got here.

  1. Wonderful poem…that last stanza I find especially moving and true.
