Kestrel

a female kestrel
in a sketch of bare branches
halts my monkey mind

Maitri Days

my daughter keeps me
from wondering if God is
there or not—you know?

Copper Beach

copper beech leaves shade
summer windows–in winter
follow the wind home

February

coffee smell lingers
north light in kitchen windows
smell of daphne soon!

Awake

salty seaweed in
miso soup tastes like tears–
remembering you

Long Reach

forbid the day from
holding cold sorrows — rivers
drain the broadest land

Wild Horses

indigent pebbles
forged in distant stars lie here–
kicked up by horse hooves

Hinterlands

between the moon and
stars–the things I can’t see
where the time flies to

Waiting

night’s fires banked down now
holding the days ornaments
embedded in song

Knowing

song bird in spare trees,
how do you know Spring will come–
wondering myself

Christmas

Christmas time–the house
a small boat; window eyes look out
sailors sleep in shifts

winter

headlights paint the night–
walkers in black barely seen
winter in Portland

Bliss

peach raspberry pie
served warm with a friendly smile
Portland skies brighten

Ninety Four

I am three again
sitting on daddy’s shoulders
wrinkles in the mind

–Burl Whitman

Refuge

the wildlife refuge
puts on its red hat and coat
for fall cotillion

–Burl Whitman

East Wind

east wind pulls desert heat
down the gorge to Portland streets
hazy sky in my mind

–Burl Whitman

Downtown

wheelchair homeless guy
peers out from his hard vessel–
acetylene eyes

–Burl Whitman

Yowl

five cats in the road
two fucking, three witnessing
all testifying

–Burl Whitman

Hard Lesson

salmon, artichokes,
scotch and Hydro-c: best friends
motorcycle down

–Burl Whitman

Crows

a murder of crows
scrawing it’s way through Sunday
afternoon porch band

-Burl Whitman
